Back Yard Landscaping – A Place To Enjoy

back yard landscapingMy back yard is one of the smallest in my neighborhood, but I always get rave reviews from neighbors and visitors to my home because I am very big into back yard landscaping.  You don’t have to put a whole lot of money into it to make your yard into something beautiful, and a place to enjoy.

The lot that my home is on is about a half an acre, but it was divided into two by the previous owner for a garage apartment in the back. He decided to put a privacy fence halfway between my house and the garage apartment, so my back yard is essentially a quarter of the size of most of my neighbors’ yards.

This has been a drawback in some ways. I cannot have a dog, and there is not a whole lot of room for my children to play, but it has also been a blessing in that back yard landscaping is made a whole lot easier because there isn’t as much area to cover.

I started by planting a garden between my fence and sidewalk, which was about a one-foot tract of dirt. I planted flowers in that area, and now it is probably the most colorful area of the entire yard and it makes the yard smell great.

Adding A Water Fountain To Your Garden

fountainA great way to spice up your garden is to add a water feature. These can be both soothing and aesthetically appealing. I’ve found that there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench next to my garden and listening to my fountain while I read a good book or do some studying. Putting in a water feature is fairly easy and relatively inexpensive, and will add immensely to the pleasantness of your garden. Also, the maintenance level is minimal.

Usually, people install fountains for the benefit of the natural ambiance it provides. For some reason, being around a gorgeous scene of water gives you a positive energy. This is also good if you practice Tai Chi or some form of yoga or meditation. The constant drone of the water is exactly what most people need to concentrate on what they are doing.

Even if you’re not into that kind of stuff, just being in a garden with a fountain has a sort of meditative quality to it, even if you’re not trying to do so. I recommend it to anyone.

When you first decide to put in a fountain, you need to put great care into picking out one that will go well with the rest of your garden. If you have any other decorations, you want to consider if it goes well with your motif. Does the fountain you’re considering stand out in your garden like a sore thumb, or does it look like it was meant to be there?

If you’re like me, you can’t naturally tell whether the fountain will be a good addition to your garden just by looking at it. So my solution was to bring my sister (a natural at fashion design and that kind of stuff) along with a picture of my garden to the store. I was able to get her expert opinion, as well as see for myself what it would look like. By doing this I was able to pick a beautiful rock fountain that goes marvelously with the rest of my garden.

How To Deal With Garden Pests

aphidsWhile tending to my own garden, I have found that one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a gardener is to walk outside to check on your plants. It’s just a routine walk to make sure that your garden is thriving, but you end up finding holes in all of your plants that looked fine only hours before.

The explanations for some of these plant-destroying holes are garden pests. Some of the main garden pests are slugs, worms, caterpillars, birds, snails, and the occasional gopher.  Although you can never wipe out these pests entirely, after all your hard work in the garden you have to do something.

Insects are one of the worst things to have in your garden; they can live under the soil, in old weeds or piles of leaves, or in a number of other places. In order to help keep insects away, always try and eliminate places in your garden and near your garden that these insects and other plant diseases could be living.

Remove old leaves, weeds, or any other decaying matter that insects and diseases could be living in from your yard. Also, regularly turn over your garden soil and break apart any clumps of dirt so that you can eliminate the living spaces any insects that might be hiding underground.

Modern and Elegant Glass Top Dining Tables

Despite the economy being down for a while, my company managed to have a pretty good fiscal year. As a result, all employees are getting a pretty good bonus soon. Some of my co-workers are planning to use their money for a much-needed holiday or to splurge on something fun that they normally wouldn’t get.

glass top dining tableOthers are going to deposit their checks directly into their banks. I’ve already got plans for my share: I desperately need to upgrade the furniture in nearly every room of my house. Everything I have is old, worn, and hopelessly out of date, so this cash infusion is coming at a good time.

I’m going to begin by looking at glass top dining tables. I love entertaining at my house, and have thrown quite a few dinner parties in the past. But to be honest, it began to be kind of embarrassing to have people over once I noticed just how shabby my furniture was.

I’m sure my friends don’t care one way or the other, but I certainly do. It will be so nice to have as beautiful glass top dining table in place of the dinged and scarred oak model I have now.

I’ve always been fond of glass top dining tables. I think the style looks both modern and elegant, and will class up my future parties for sure. I can leave the surface exposed for those times when I have formal parties or cover it with a nice tablecloth for those events where I desire a warmer, cozier atmosphere.

White Wicker Furniture

White Wicker FurnitureI’m not a professional decorator or anything, but I do take a certain amount of pride in the way my home looks. I manage to make the most of my limited space, and have a pretty good eye for which couches, chairs, tables, and accessories would look best within my overall design scheme.

Surprisingly enough, white wicker furniture plays a rather prominent role both inside and outside my house.

Decorating with outdoor white wicker furniture is a no-brainer around here. I can’t even count the number of porches and patios that feature these sets. I think one of the reasons white wicker furniture is so popular is because of its versatility.

Though the material is obviously the same, you can change things up by mixing and matching the fabric on the cushions, pillows, and table umbrella. And it’s easy to swap out the old fabric for a new design, which gives you the feeling of having a brand-new patio set without the high price tag. I love it!

The same principle holds true for indoor white wicker furniture. Its versatility makes it perfect for practically any room in the house. For instance, I have a sun room off the kitchen that features several great pieces, including a chaise lounge, armchair, ottoman, and rocking chair.

This is probably the most comfortable room in the whole place, and is the one that the family flocks to for television, board games, homework, and reading. White wicker furniture is also terrific for bedrooms.

It might sound odd at first, but I have some wonderful bureaus, nightstands, and vanity tables in my home — all of which have received lots of compliments from guests and visitors.

Swimming Pool Heaters

Swimming Pool Heaters For More Use Of The Pool

Swimming PoolDuring the winter, you might not as enthusiastic or willing to jump into the pool as you were during the summer. A big plunge into a body of chilly water is refreshing when it’s hot, but painful and undesirable in the midst of the cold season. But it seems like kind of a waste to not use a pool all year round.

If you do own a pool, you probably want to get as much use out of it as possible. Owning a pool means plenty of recreation for the family and for guests, and swimming is also one of the best types of aerobic exercise.

So if you want to be able to get a good work out and entertain the kids during the winter and not just in the warmer spring and summer seasons, installing a swimming pool heater is the solution that you’re looking for.

Swimming pool heaters can help extend the use of your pool by keeping the pool water at a temperature that’s tolerable for swimming use.

You might be reluctant to use a swimming pool heater because it might seem really expensive to maintain. However, if you properly insulate your pool you can save a lot of heat and money.

Pest Control Service

Pest ControlI don’t ordinarily freak out over bugs. I can handle coming across the occasional spider in the house, and have no problem getting rid of it on my own. But the minute I saw a cockroach in my kitchen, I lost it. Roaches are a whole different ballgame, and can signal a more serious infestation.

As soon as I saw the first one, I went out and bought all kinds of traps, which I dutifully set up in strategic places around my house. The problem was, the traps actually caught a bunch more of these creepy crawlies. Rather than put my mind at ease, the traps did just the opposite. I decided I better call in a pest control service to take over.

A pest control service is far better equipped to eliminate household pests than I am, and their methods are a lot more sophisticated than setting up the sticky little traps that I bought at the hardware store. They have expert exterminators on staff who can examine my house, evaluate the problem, and provide a solution – often in just one day. That’s a relief, because as long as I know that there are cockroaches all over the place, I am not going to be able to rest comfortably around here.

It didn’t take long to find a local pest control service that could send someone over for a free estimate. Once the guy arrived, I explained the problem from the beginning, and showed him the roach traps that I’d placed in the different rooms. He poked around for a bit, then gave me a reasonable quote for taking care of the pests. He also passed along a brochure telling me what a huge headache a cockroach infestation could be.

<!–more–>The pamphlet contained helpful tidbits that did nothing but guarantee I wouldn’t be able to sleep until I had the house fumigated. For example, it said that since cockroaches mostly come out at night, the ones I saw in the daytime might only be the tip of the iceberg.

They might even have been out in the open due to “overcrowding”, which was an image I certainly didn’t need in my head. Seriously, that was probably the best sales pitch this pest control service could have used!

Anyway, I didn’t need much prodding. I wrote a check out to the pest control service on the spot and had the exterminator go after the roaches with the strongest weapons in his arsenal. He warned me that he would probably have to perform a couple of follow-up treatments to ensure that all the eggs and so forth were destroyed, which was fine by me. Better to get all the pests now than have to go through this again in a few months.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the way this pest control service helped eliminate cockroaches from my house. If I ever have future problems with roaches, mice, termites, ants, ticks, bed bugs, fleas or any of the other countless pests that can invade a home, I won’t hesitate to give them a call!

Front Yard Landscaping Ideas

Cost-effective Front Yard Landscaping Ideas

Front Yard LandscapingOwning a home is rewarding, and expensive. As a homeowner, you are constantly looking and searching for ways to both maintain the value of your home as well as improving it for the market place. One of the best places to do this is the exterior of the house, whether it is the front yard, the back yard, or the roof. In fact, front yard landscaping is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your house for maximum fair market home value. So whether you are looking to move, or simply want to improve the value of your house, here are a couple of good front yard landscaping ideas to try out for yourself.

First of all, all good front yard landscaping ideas have a couple of things in common. Most important of all is the idea of curb appeal. Curb appeal basically means the aesthetics of the house as it is viewed from the curb. You have probably often heard the expressions about the importance of a first impression. Curb appeal basically means the first impression that prospective home buyers have on your house. Any and all of your front yard landscaping ideas need to have a positive impact on your curb appeal. Improve your curb appeal and improve your home’s value.

Of course, not everyone agrees on all front yard landscaping ideas. Like many other interior design choices, you are usually operating with an expiration date. Not all design looks age well, and you should generally avoid both the dated and the very trendy. Your front yard landscaping ideas should, whenever possible, have a classic look that will last years, if not decades.

Then again, all front yard landscaping ideas should do a couple of things. First of all, they should properly showcase the house. After all, the house is the most important part of the property. You should think about twice where you plant those trees; are the blocking the house and windows too much, or are they blocking them not enough? You need to balance clean lines and a clean look with providing privacy and shade.

Whatever path you choose, your front yard landscaping ideas should have a good balance of your personality. Obviously, you should landscape your house in a way that you love, but with the knowledge that not everyone has the same taste. Make your choices not too bold and not too timid. I especially recommend you consult with realtors for their thoughts on your front yard landscaping ideas to make sure that you are improving your home, both for you and for your investment!
